Clar Compasses

si-clar-1Take accurate and simultaneous measurements of dip angle and dip azimuth in a single operation. Patterned after the design of Professor Dr. Clar of the University of Vienna, this Stratum Compass (also referred to as the COCLA compass) is ideal for use in geological, geophysical, mining and tectonic applications. This robust, long lasting compass has a unique transparent bottom with a hinged mirror so you can take measurements even when the compass is held overhead. The 50mm diameter horizontal circle is graduated in 1 degree intervals and numbered every 10 degrees, from 0 to 360 degrees, with a declination adjustment to 30 degrees. A 60mm ruler is etched along one side of the compass base. The hinged cover features a 25mm vertical circle mounted to one of the trunnions. It is graduated every 5 degrees, from 0-235 degrees, with lines designed so you can reliably read to an accuracy of 1 degree. The quadrants of the vertical circle are alternating red and black to better coordinate the readings of dip angle and dip azimuth. Eddy current damping of the needle allows for quick readings. The compass needle is always locked until the release lever is operated. Compass dimensions: 3 x 4 x 1" (74 x 96 x 25mm) closed, and it weighs 10 oz. (275g). Complete with lanyard and instructions. Made in Germany.

si-clar-2The GEKOM is a robust stratum compass available at a moderate price according to the measuring method of Prof. Dr. Clar allowing the measurement of the azimuth of dip and angle of dip in one single operation.

As the vertical circles are visible from above, the azimuth of dip and angle of dip can be read at a glance. The upper part of the housing can easily be removed for the adjustment of declination and inclination. The housing is made of antimagnetic and resistant solid light metal with a surface protection anodized in blue colour; compass needle: automatic arresting when the needle is not in use, North end red, South end black, with adjustable inclination weight, length of needle: 44 mm, horizontal circle diameter 60 mm, interval of graduation 2°, reading by estimation 1°, anticlockwise numbering every 10°, cardinal points are also shown with the East and West markings reversed, declination adjustment up to 360°, diameter of vertical circle 19 mm, dip measuring range 270°, graduation interval 5°, reading by estimation 1°, numbering every 20° in quadrants, cover plate with friction adjustment screw, dimensions of closed compass 86x70x20 mm, weight 240 g. Made in Germany.
